Formerly, SUN COMPANY INC until 1992 and SUN OIL COMPANY until 1976. Announced exit from gasoline refining & marketing, and intent to sell the Philadelphia and Marcus Hook refineries, Sept 6, 2011. Owns 4,900 gasoline stations. Announced intent to spin-off 81% of SunCoke Energy, a maker of coking coal for steel production, June 2010. Spun-out ORYX, (later sold) and divested remaining interests in oil and gas production. Sold Sunoco Chemicals polypropylene business to Braskem S.A. (NYSE: BAK) for $350 million cash February 1, 2010. Founded in 1886 by J. Howard Pew.
