Merged with CHEMICAL BANK in 1996. Acquired HAMBRECHT & QUIST GROUP INC (NYSE:HQ) December 9, 1999 for $50 per share. Agreed to sell Brown Co. to E-TRADE for $1.6 billion September 29, 2005. Acquired COLLEGIATE FUNDING SERVICES INC (Q:CFSI) March 1, 2006 for $663 million, $20 per share. Agreed to acquire BEAR STEARNS & CO (N:BSC) March 16, 2008 for $2 per share, offer raised to $10 per share March 24, 2008. Dividend cut February 23, 2009.
