Designs, manufactures and markets a line of personal computers. Pioneered direct sales of PC's. Name change from DELL COMPUTER CORP July 18, 2003. Began recall of 4.1 million lithium batteries, made by Sony, used in its notebook computers, because of the danger they could overheat and cause a fire, August 14, 2006. SEC formal investigation announced November 15, 2006. September 15, 2009, settled charges of fraudulent and deceptive business practices. "Dell engaged in bait and switch advertising with respect to no interest financing promotions, misled consumers to believe they had qualified for promotional financing, failed to adequately disclose the terms of its next day service contracts and failed to provide consumers with warranty service and promised rebates." Acquired PEROT SYSTEMS CORP (N:PER) November 3, 2009 for $3.9 billion, $30 per share. Dell paid $100 million to settle SEC case July 22, 2010; and CEO Michael Dell agreed to pay a $4 million civil penalty.
